Local communities commemorate World Refugee Day in a show of solidarity and care

It was 10.30 a.m. and the sun shone brightly over Jakarta. Dozens of Jakartans of all ages were sitting in front of a traditional house of Betawi, the city’s native ethnic group, which is nestled in a densely populated area. They came together to commemorate the World Refugee Day (WRD), which falls on 20 June. Among the audience were members of a local youth organization, Child Forum, and young refugees who live near the kampong. CONTINUE

UNIC and Embassy of South Africa in Indonesia observe Nelson Mandela International Day

This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day marked the 100th Anniversary of his birth. The Day was celebrated at Panti Sosial Anak Asuh (PSAA 3), a girls’ home in Tebet, South Jakarta, where staff from the UN Information Centre (UNIC) and the Embassy of South Africa joined hands to honour Mandela’s legacy. The home houses girls aged from 12-17 years who are either orphaned, from poor and broken families or were abandoned as babies. CONTINUE
